Characterization of non-timber forest products in the El Naranjo del Toa community, Baracoa

Abstract

The research was carried out in El Naranjo del Toa Community, belonging to the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, in the Baracoa municipality, from February- March 2024, with the objective of characterizing non-timber forest products. The existence of the species mentioned as non-timber forest products was verified through simple random sampling, for which 19 plots were raised. The species with the highest use value fall into two categories (medicinal and utensils, tools and materials for construction), among which the following stand out: Calophyllum anitillanun Britton, Hibiscus elatus. Sw. and Carapa guianensis. Aubl., 18 species were recorded that provide NTFPs, of these 40 are referred to as useful by the population, which means that 67,8% of the plants that the population reported, in addition the most represented families are: Fabaceae, Arecaceae, Clusiaceae and Euphorbiaceae with two.
