Abstract

A descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective study was conducted to determine the main causes of morbidity and mortality in geriatric vascular Service Brain "Dr. Agosthino Neto" Hospital. 1393 patients admitted in the period from Jan. 2008 to 31 December 2009. The main cause of morbidity and mortality in patients over 65 years was ischemic cerebral infarction with 24,12 and 31% were studied respectively, followed in frequency hemorrhagic strokes and heart. The main complications were phlebitis and hypostatic bronchopneumonia, which dominated the deceased with 52.74%. 1040 necropsies (74.6%) were performed. This index is considered low but there clinicopathologic high (91.01%) correlation.
